A young man has been apprehended by police in Bilaspur, Chhattisgarh, following allegations of misconduct at a local temple. Authorities provided this update on Saturday.
According to police reports, a notorious individual named Ashraf Khan, aged 26, was arrested for allegedly engaging in lewd behavior and desecrating the Shiva Lingam at a temple located in Ashok Nagar.
The incident reportedly occurred on Friday night. The city’s Superintendent of Police, Nimitesh Singh, stated that the Sarakanda police received a complaint from a woman claiming that a young man had violated the sanctity of the Shiva Lingam at the Durga temple in Ashok Nagar.
Police identified the suspect as Ashraf Khan, known for his criminal background and substance abuse issues. He reportedly sells betel leaves from a cart.
Singh mentioned that news of the incident incited local residents, leading to an angry mob that vandalized Ashraf's home and attempted to set his betel cart on fire.
Law enforcement arrived at the scene to calm the agitated crowd. In light of the tense situation, additional police forces were deployed to the area.
After the incident, Ashraf attempted to hide within the neighborhood and was reportedly planning to flee to Uttar Pradesh. However, police managed to apprehend him late at night.
The authorities have filed charges against Ashraf under various sections of the Indian Penal Code, including Section 296 for indecent acts in public places, Section 299 for insulting religious beliefs, and Section 351(2).
Additionally, police have registered a case against the mob for arson. Officers have been instructed to remain vigilant in the area as the investigation continues.
